Three Ways To Use Instagram For Research

It’s no lie that Instagram has been growing tremendously the last couple of years. The social media platform has even surpassed Facebook in usage. With more people flocking over to the platform, it’s important to know not just how you can use it for brand awareness and promotions, but you can also do some pretty awesome market research with it as well.

From hashtags to content trends, there are a lot of ways you and your brand can do market research through Instagram. Below are just three of the ways I use the platform to do research and help guide myself, as well as my clients, through Instagram.

Research Related Hashtags

Whether you are starting out, re-branding or just looking for ways to garnish more exposure for your posts, searching for hashtag trends right on the platform will allow you to see what is trending in the moment. When you search one hashtag, there is a section labeled Related. Related will show you other hashtags related to the hashtag you entered. This is an opportunity to see what hashtags are trending and which you should be using in your content. I would like to stress that it does change often, so don’t go in limbo of using the same hashtags for months.

Research Leaders in the Industry

In the same way you search for hashtags, you can search for people. Search by name or industry and the most related users to your search inquiry will appear. This is an opportunity to see who the leaders are in your region and industry, what your competitors are doing, others in your industry from different markets, and more.

Research Content

Lastly, while you are going through hashtags and industry leaders, take notes. Look at their content. What are they posting? How long is their content? What type of media is getting the most traction. It’s important to know what is working and how you can use it to your advantage.

Instagram has come a long way in the last two years. With more features being added regularly, it’s no wonder Instagram is a top platform amongst teens and young adults.
